Raising awareness of the needs of disabled people and promoting inclusion

A key aim of DAIIs work is to promote inclusion and equality of opportunity of disabled people in all areas of community life. DAII does this by providing information, advice, guidance, training and consultancy to a wide range of statutory, voluntary and business sector organisations. By doing this we support organisations and enable them to become more accessible and inclusive to disabled people.
Here are some examples of work we have carried out recently:
- Free training for disabled people on their rights under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), focussing on giving practical advice around accessing goods and services.
- Setting up a ground-breaking project called the Disability Reference Group, which supports a group of disabled people representing every impairment group to monitor and comment on what the Council is doing to implement their Disability Equality Scheme.
- A project for Islington strategic Partnership which involved working with 60 local disabled people to find out barriers that they face using local parks and open spaces, and to put forward recommendations to improve access.
- Supporting local disabled people to take part in a range of key decision-making consultation forums in the Borough.
DAII also provides a professional Disability Training, Auditing and Consultancy service specifically for service providers in the statutory and business sectors.
